War
I once protested war. "War is unhealthy for children and other living things." So went a poster that I had on my dorm wall during the Viet Nam war. And it's true. But so are tyranical dictatorships. So are terrorists with nuclear explosives. Or with chemical weapons. Or with smallpox. Or anthrac. As anti-war protestors, we generalized our personal philosophy of human relationships to society at large. If I'm completely peaceful, the idea goes, and simply refuse to fight a la Gandhi, then other people a) are less likely to attack me and b) if they do attack me will be on the moral low-ground and will eventually lose. But the whole thing falls apart when you bring certain other factors into the picture, namely, evil, psychopathic bullys who don't care if they are on the "moral high ground" or not. People who beat you up to get what you have and laugh when you cry. Allowing a bully to beat me up on principle is one thing (although, I actually always thought self-defense was ok), but what about when they attack your children, your friends. What about a bully who lives next door and terrorizes the neighborhood. When you find out he is making bombs and stockpiling shotgun shells, don't you think it's ok to send in the swat team? (Assuming all the negotiations have failed and he keeps claiming to have no weapons) Do you need to wait until he kills someone? In the atmosphere of todays liberal justice system, you might, but common sense says take him out before he hurts more people. And there you have Sadaaaam, the beast of Bagdad. If we wait until he uses nuclear weapons, or anthrax, or poison gas against us, it'll be too late. We have to do what is hard and unpleasant and go to war now. But, don't worry, you can still hold your nose in the air and prat on about how war is evil, and how children will die (ever hear about Sadaam's prisons for the children of people who spoke against him?) And after our military destroys him, you will still have the moral high ground in your own self-righteous little mind. You can enjoy the benefits of not having the bully, and you can still sneer at the military who have protected you. But, I say, take the bastard out. The sooner the better.
